Bessie merely wanted a fresh start, but Mr. Dark gave her something more - something a lot worse.

Bessie got to see how her life would've turned out to be without her bad choices: she had a loving husband, lovely children, and overall happy life. It was like a very vivid dream, but like all other dreams, it came to an end. When Bessie came to, facing the cruel reality felt even more difficult than ever before - she begged Mr. Dark to give the dream back.

A deal was made so that as long as Bessie stays in circus, she gets to have the dream every night when she goes to sleep - but if she ever tried to leave, the dream would be replaced with worsening nightmares of all of her shortcomings and bad decisions.

PERSONALITY

Summing up Bessie is easy: she's a cranky and cynical lady. Her past as a short woman in a criminal family taught her not to take crap from anyone. She keeps her feelings strictly - probably too strictly - under control, rarely showing off anything else than her grouchy face. She still manages to put on a passable nice and charming front when it's needed (i.e. when talking to figures of authority), but otherwise it's difficult to get a genuine smile from her. This isn't to say that she's emotionless, though - she's just very, very repressed. Over the years, pushing her emotions aside has become such a natural response to her that dealing with stronger emotions is actually very difficult to her. Most of the time, her helpers are a locked door and a bottle of good wine. After joining Circus Darkrai, Bessie has taken to preferring keeping everyone at arms length, not wanting to get to close to anybody. She still has a weak spot for young women and girls, though.

HISTORY

Looking at her now, it's difficult to believe that Bessie was once a lively and outgoing, rather charming young woman. Sadly the said traits played a part in her falling in love with a man who was a member of the local gang, Famiglia Allegria. The man persuaded her into joining the gang when Bessie was barely of age. With her pretty face, she made a good, shining front for the family's shady business. She didn't really care that she was part of something illegal, as long as she was with her love. Unfortunately, only a few years after Bessie joined Famiglia, her boyfriend died in a shootout. Her rose-colored glasses broken, she was forced to realize how dirty and cruel the criminal life really was. For a moment, she contemplated leaving, but came into conclusion that there was no way out anymore. The gang had became her family. Thus, she could only try to harden up and push on - which is exactly what she did.

Joining Famiglia was a decision Bessie regretted all her life, so once she was offered a way out, she took it without hesitation.
